Research cooperation: VIAOPTIC and the University of erlangen- Nuremberg are exploring the potential of the pressure induced solidification technique for the fabrication of thick-walled lenses.


The Institute of Polymer Technology (LKT) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has been able to show that the pressure induced solidification technique leads to quality enhancements in optic components. To find out more precisely how this technique can be translated into practice, the German Research Society (DFG) has approved a knowledge transfer project  that will now enable the Institute of Polymer Technology to collaborate with VIAOPTIC and partners KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH, HB-Therm AG and Covestro AG and examine the potential of the technique in more detail.

In the manufacture of plastic optics it may be a disadvantage that the material in the mold does not all solidify at the same time, i.e. the material at the colder walls of the mold solidifies first. This time shift means that there are cooler, solidified layers of material at the cavity wall while inner layers are hotter and still fluid. As the material cools further, residual stress occurs which may impair the optical properties. The pressure induced solidification technique exploits the fact that polymers do not only solidify when cooled, but also under high pressure. When subjected to sudden and extremely high pressure of 1500-2000 bar, the material solidifies immediately, although it is still hot. This results in better properties....» more

Pressrelease: Helvoet Rubber & Plastic Technologies and VIAOPTIC GmbH signs an agreement to sell plastic collimator business

Helvoet Rubber & Plastic Technologies, established in 1939, internationally active in custommade development and manufacturing of rubber and plastic components and assemblies. In July 2016 Helvoet has signed an agreement to sell the plastic collimator business to the German plastic optics specialist VIAOPTIC GmbH.

The business for plastic collimators includes high precision aspherical plastic lenses used as collimator in combination with diode laser. The business transfer to VIAOPTIC offers a long term supply to the customers in line with the well-known quality standard.
