Research cooperation: VIAOPTIC and the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg are exploring the potential of the pressure induced solidification technique for the fabrication of thick-walled lenses.

The Institute of Polymer Technology (LKT) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has been able to show that the pressure induced solidification technique leads to quality enhancements in optic components. To find out more precisely how this technique can be translated into practice, the German Research Society (DFG) has approved a knowledge transfer project  that will now enable the Institute of Polymer Technology to collaborate with VIAOPTIC and partners KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH, HB-Therm AG and Covestro AG and examine the potential of the technique in more detail.

In the manufacture of plastic optics it may be a disadvantage that the material in the mold does not all solidify at the same time, i.e. the material at the colder walls of the mold solidifies first. This time shift means that there are cooler, solidified layers of material at the cavity wall while inner layers are hotter and still fluid. As the material cools further, residual stress occurs which may impair the optical properties. The pressure induced solidification technique exploits the fact that polymers do not only solidify when cooled, but also under high pressure. When subjected to sudden and extremely high pressure of 1500-2000 bar, the material solidifies immediately, although it is still hot. This results in better properties.

Residual stress may lead to changes in the refractive index in various polarizing directions, the material becomes birefringent. Pronounced birefringence and therefore poorer quality is shown in the two optical stress images above (circularly polarized light) by many colored and bright/dark lines. Pressure induced solidification therefore leads to a significant reduction in birefringence of the 18 mm thick sample. In the cooperation project, an injection molding tool is modified to allow the pressure induced solidification technique to be carried out.  The results then provide more precise data on shape accuracy, surface quality, focal length, etc. besides enabling an estimation of cost and therefore a more exact assessment of the economic potential of the technique. We are delighted with the funding and would like to thank the DFG for providing it. We will report on our results here.

EnvironmentalManagement: Successful EMAS monitoring audit in June 2017

EMAS is the hallmark of quality for an ecologically oriented corporate culture. Since 2015 VIAOPTIC  voluntary contributs with ist own environmental managementsystem according to EMAS  to its social responsibility for the environment.

EMAS (Eco-Management an Audit Scheme) is the most exacting system for sustainable environmental management worldwide. EMAS participants operate a standardised environment management system according to ISO 14001 and undergo yearly audits by government-certified, independent environmental verifiers. In their annual environmental statement (see downloads) they publish their detailed environmental data, such as resource and energy consumption, emissions, waste, etc. They also set environmental goals and disclose their plans to continuously and systematically improve their environmental performance.

LogisticsBuilding: New logistics building opened in January 2015

Due to the fast growth of the last few years, the company had outgrown its warehouse after 5 years in the new building in the Leitz Park. It took only a record time of 4 months to build and move into the new warehouse providing 750 pallet spaces. The fact that operations ran so smoothly was due in no small part to the speed with wich the City of Wetzlar granted building permission and the experienced team of architects and construction companies.

TradeFair Review: VIAOPTIC exhibited Head-Up Display at Optatec 2014

In the 11 years of the young company´s existence, it was already the fifth participation of VIAOPTIC GmbH at Optatec - the international trade fair of optic technologies, components and systems - in Frankfurt. VIAOPTIC was at its usual location at Booth G30. As a special highlight, visitors were able to see a Head-Up Display.

"This exhibit is a good opportunity for us to demonstrate our capabilities," says Bernhard Willnauer, Managing Director of VIAOPTIC GmbH. Besides deflecting mirrors with ultrahigh-qualitiy aluminium coatings, combiners with anti-reflection surfaces, beamsplitters and hard coatings, VIAOPTIC ist an acknowledged expert for lighting unit components for Head-Up Displays.

TradeFair: VIAOPTIC at Optatec 2014

The 12th Optatec international trade fair for optical technologies, components and systems will be held at the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre from the 20th through the 22nd of May, 2014.

The 12th Optatec international trade fair for optical technologies, components and systems is casting its shadow well in advance! First of all, as the recognised world’s leading trade fair in its sector, Optatec is the only event dedicated exclusively to issues involving the development and application of optical technologies. Secondly, industry representatives from the fields of components, assemblies and complete systems meet up with potential customers from all over the world at Optatec. Thirdly, international expert visitors are presented with worldwide offerings for technologies, components and system solutions at Optatec. Fourthly, the spectrum of offerings and information is more than just rounded out by an exceptional, technology and applications oriented supplementary programme. And fifthly, the potential for innovation demonstrated by the future-oriented photonics sector will once again be made plainly apparent at Optatec in the form of both hardware and software.

The fact that this is indeed the case is not only substantiated by the roughly 500 companies who have thus far registered to participate at Optatec. As a result, the nearly 194,000 square feet of exhibition floor space available in hall 3 at the international trade fair centre in Frankfurt are already entirely booked out! The exhibitors come from 25 countries, with China and the USA comprising the largest foreign quotas of 15% and 10% respectively.

TradeFair Review: Successful VIAOPTIC debut at Light + Building 2014

"It exceeded our expectations by far," said delighted Sales Manager Philipp Thoss. VIAOPTIC´s debut at Light + Building was a resounding success! What particularly counts is the quality of the many new leads. The booth staff were well qualified to discuss individual solutions on the spot.

The new design and favourable position of the booth undoubtedly helped draw the attention of potential customers to VIAOPTIC. The high proportion of international leads is only one of the reasons for exhibiting again in two years at Light + Building 2016.
